CHECK YOUR WIPERS - AND USE OF YOUR CAR'S LIGHTS THIS WINTER

You might have missed International Check Your Wipers Day - it was on November 16th, the day a global reminder to ensure windscreen wipers are checked and provide visibility on the roads. It may seem like a small thing to do but as the harsher weather conditions start to roll in, checking windscreen wipers is one of the ways we can remain safe on the roads this winter. With this in mind, Insurance Revolution has reviewed the Highway Code to highlight relevant rules for drivers regarding windscreen wipers, as well as some general winter driving tips. First, Rule 235 instructs drivers to make use of windscreen wipers to maintain visibility on the roads, particularly in foggy or rainy weather conditions. When driving in fog you should: - use your lights as required - keep a safe distance behind the vehicle in front - use your windscreen wipers and demisters This legal requirement could see drivers face trouble if they don't maintain clear visibility. As harsher weather increases the risk of accidents on the road, drivers should operate their vehicles appropriately. In more general rules for winter driving, Rule 113 of the Highway Code falls under the 'lighting requirements' category and is in place to guarantee cars are appropriately using headlights, the rule states: Drivers MUST: - ensure all sidelights and rear registration plate lights are lit between sunset and sunrise. - use headlights at night, except on a road which has lit street lighting. These roads are generally restricted to a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) unless otherwise specified. - use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced. Lastly, Insurance Revolution would like to remind drivers of Rule 226 which stipulates when a driver should make use of their headlights. The rule states: Drivers MUST: -use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves.
